In major port cities, shipping activities represent a substantial share of total emissions.  Port cranes typically run on a diesel generator which runs 24/7, often kept idling while not in use. The power demand during idling is so small, it makes using the generator extremely unattractive because of its low efficiency during low power and low rpm modes, meaning excess fuel used. Emissions such as particulate matter and sulphur dioxide are also increased due to inefficient combustion during these times. With hybridization, the generator is now sized to charge the batteries only, not actually lift the load. Thus, the crane is able to use a generator that is one-third the size of a typical unit. A typical RTG generator of400-750kW can be replaced with a smaller 100-150kW unit. The generator is now far smaller and less expensive to operate, and operates at peak efficiency, with virtually no hours spent at idle.
